The Perfect Jeans For Your 'Ass'ets
There has never been a better time to shop for jeans than now! There is not one specific trend currently dictating the shape, length or wash that is in fashion. Finally, we girls get to wear jeans that suit and flatter our figures while looking super cool.
my definitive guide to find the best jeans for your body shape
Generally, we classify women's body shapes into four silhouettes when discussing jeans. These include - straight (boyish), curvy (hourglass), pear (narrower shoulders to hip ratio) and inverted triangle (narrower hips to shoulder ratio).
Straight / boyish silhouette
A straight figure is the most fun shape when it comes to jeans as you can wear boyfriend, skinny, flair and cropped styles in both light and dark washes. Pretty much everything. Often girls with a boyish shape live in jeans for this reason and build their wardrobes around jeans mixing different styles and trends always keeping their look fresh and easy. Sarah Harris is a fantastic style icon. Alexa Chung is too!
Hourglass / curvy shape
When I dress hourglass figured girls, I always think about keeping their proportions in balance and highlighting their curves. The top half of your body needs to align with the bottom to make the look even (visualize an actual hourglass, it helps!). Highlighting your natural waistline (the narrowest part of the waist) is crucial here. If the bust and hips are highlighted but the waist is not, you will appear boxy and like a wide long rectangle.
The best shapes of jeans for an hourglass figure are straight leg, cropped or long flairs. Straight leg are always in style and often termed the 'classic' jeans shape. Flairs create a double hourglass shape which is incredibly flattering and as they are super trendy right now, it's a great time to play with this style. With very careful attention to width and proportion, boyfriend jeans can also be very cool and sexy in that 'dressed in your man's clothes' kind of way. Gemma Arterton, Nina Garcia and Gigi Hadid are great fashion icons for this shape.
Pear shape Silhouette
Denim is the master of illusion that can totally rule a pear shaped girls wardrobe if well fitting! By using high stretch denim, lift and hold technology and a dark wash, jeans can be the most flattering and balancing bottom options for this shape.
The crucial part is to find jeans that have a lot of waist shaping that will both hug your hips and fit your waist. Many girls with both hourglass and pear shaped silhouettes that come to me for styling assistance complain about waist gaping. Shaping and stretch are the answer. By focusing on a high stretch denim and a medium high waist you can get the perfect fit.
I would avoid skinny jeans as it emphasizes the hips, which we need to balance in proportion to your top. That said, with great styling, skinnies can be pulled off as you see with Jennifer Lopez. In her case she has a rock solid body and confidence to match. If you do too then go for it! Otherwise, I would stick with a straight leg cropped or long (with heels is super flattering) or a wide leg that takes the focus off the hips and instead creates a long lean line. Heels here will also help. If you want to wear flats, use a pointed toe that creates the illusion of length. Another trick of the eye 👀
Inverted triangle shape
The most challenging shape for denim. Inverted silhouettes shine in figure flattering dresses and jumpsuits that are open and frame the face, showcasing your enviable upper half. You want to wear jeans that create an illusion of a more prominent derrière in this instance and can really play with washes, pockets and details to help balance your upper half to lower. Note - Smaller pockets make your bum appear fuller while a lighter wash naturally draws attention down. In lighter washes, use shading to create and enhance the shape of your hips.
